Ronny Turiaf and the Lakers officially parted ways Friday, ending the affable
forward’s three years in Los Angeles.

General Manager Mitch Kupchak said the Lakers were unwilling to match the
four-year, $17 million offer Turiaf received from the Golden State Warriors. As
a restricted free agent, the Lakers had the option of matching the offer but it
would have pushed the Lakers’ payroll beyond the luxury tax.

Turiaf’s minutes were expected to drop next season with Andrew Bynum’s return
to the lineup after missing most of last season because of a knee injury. Bynum
will play center, Pau Gasol will move to power forward and Lamar Odom at the
other forward spot.

“How much time realistically was going to be left for Ronny? Probably not
enough to justify that kind of financial commitment,” Kupchak said.

Turiaf averaged 6.6 points and 3.9 rebound 78 games last season.

Kupchak said the decision to let Turiaf go was difficult, given his
personable demeanor and ability.

“We will miss Ronny, yes, the emotion and energy he brought to the team,”
Kupchak said.
